Restaurant Review : Jose Tequilas!

Jose Tequila is a local restaurant only found on the southeast side of Virginia. One is located in Richmond the state capital but the others are located around the Virginia Beach area. With a cool staff and even cooler margaritas, Jose tequilas is one of my favorite Mexican restraints found locally. Chimichangas, tamales, and tacos are my go-to here, but I will get a torta sometimes to switch things up a bit. If you’re having a rough week and want a fun place to grab a drink, this is your spot. I love tequila, and the margaritas served here, especially the frozen swirl margaritas are worth the trip alone.

The frozen swirl (on the left) combines your standard frozen margarita with a swirl of frozen sangria for a great combo of sweet and tart. It’s now my favorite margarita, and enjoy it every time I visit. Jose tequilas has a decent amount of frozen margarita flavors like the strawberry margarita (on right). If you like the right amount of sweetness and a buzz for your bucks, this is the place you should be drinking.

The menu is very standard of any Mexican restaurant, but the execution is top notch. Everything taste fresh, comes fast, and is packed with flavor. Of course this being Virginia, the chips and salsa served at the begging of the meal comes with “White Sauce, White Salsa or Queso Blanco”. This is very much a virginia staple said to be traced to a Mexican restaurant in Virginia Beach that has now since closed down. It’s a thicker salsa with no raw veggies, with heavy seasoning. Think of white salsa as a Mexican ranch dressing used to dip chips in. Go anywhere in Virginia and you will find this sauce served at every Mexican restaurant.

Let’s talk tacos, but to be specific lets talk the “Chupacabra Taco! This thing comes with everything you can imagine, including the calories. Carnitas, bacon, bacon chorizo, chipotle crema, guacamole, onions and cilantro all stacked neatly on a cheese crusted flour tortilla! These monsters pack a ton of flavors into one bite, but squeeze some lime juice on top to complete your experience. They are served a la carte, or as three tacos, but honestly I could not imagine eating three of these monstrously delicious tacos.

If you are ever in the Virginia area, specifically the Hampton Roads area, you should defiantly check out Jose Tequilas. The owners are so friendly, and the staff is a reflection of that. The food leaves you happy, the margaritas leave you even happier, and the atmosphere is what keeps you coming back for more. If you are a fajita fan, they are full-flavored but the star entrees here are the tacos and the chimichangas. Although sometimes they might lack a bit of consistency, on the best days they are one of the best in town.
