Restaurant Review- Buddy’s Pizza: The Original Detroit Style Pizza

I love Detroit. What an awesome tale of a city that was down on its luck, riddled with crime, nepotism, and bad financial planning. Much of my family lives in the Motorcity, and I visit whenever I can not just for family, but also for food. If you are new to this site you might not be aware of the many Detroit original foods that come out of the city. Detroit-style coney dogs have been made famous by All-American Coney Island featured on many television shows and magazines, but Detroit also has its own pizza style where Buddy’s reigns supreme. The O.G. of a Detroit classic that still has not missed a beat.

A meat lovers pizza (sausage, ham, pepperoni, and bacon)

You might be more familiar with a Chicago style pizza , rounded deep dish crust with cheese and the tomato sauce on top. There are many Detroit-style pizza shops, and even large chains like Little Caesar’s that try to capture that icon Detroit feel. A deep-dish square pizza with a crispy exterior and a chewy interior that’s topped with thick cheese and tomato-based sauce to the edged of the sheet. Nobody does this better in my opinion than Buddy’s Pizza. As one of the oldest Detroit pizza parlors around, they have the experience and skill that makes traveling for some Motown pizza worth the flight.

Pepperoni Pizza

If you are outside of Michigan, your closest version of the amazing pizza above is most likely Little Caesar’s pizza. Let me be clear, Little Caesars lives in the shadow of Buddy’s Pizza. I start eating my pizza from the corners if I’m not sharing then working my way to the middle. With two-thirds of my slice having that crispy crust and cheese, these are the prime real estate slices. The book cheese spread over the top mixed with the tangy tomato base sauces is just the perfect pair. Honestly, for me the toppings are okay, but I could eat just a cheese pizza every day from here. The base crust, cheese, and sauce combination are so good that the meats, veggies, and other toppings almost get in the way of that pure pizza taste.

One of the must-stop culinary destinations in the city that’s accessible for almost anyone because of multiple locations. If you want the best experience I recommend visiting the original location in the heart of Detroit. If you are a pizza lover, (who isn’t) you owe it to yourself to try a real Detroit-style pizza from Buddy’s. It’s not the only place, but arguably the best place to get a true Detroit culinary staple. If you are looking for more of a fancy dinner while in Motown, check out our review of Parc Detroit Here!
