I have been in Columbus, Ohio for a month but have not found too many restaurants worth reviewing. A local recommended a seafood restaurant, but coming from Virginia Beach I had doubts. While exploring I stumbled into Germantown where Schmidt’s Sausage Haus is located. An old German restaurant located at the end of a long street, sitting at 4.7 stars on google with almost 8,000 reviews. I had to try it…
I am a fan of authentic German beer cheese dip, I get it whenever I can. I ordered the pretzel bites and currywurst as an appetizer. The currywurst was just okay, nothing that set my tastebuds on fire. Pork sausage with a curry sauce on top served with waffle fries. Currywurst is considered a fast food meal in Germany and that is exactly what this reminded me of. The curry sauce was decent and the slight crunch from the skin of the sausage is my favorite part of sausages.
The real star of the appetizer menu was the pretzel bites. These were not your standard dense pretzel nuggets, they were light, airy, and had more it a savory salted donut taste and feel. Dip those into the beer cheese and you get an amazing German meal. I would get a to-go bag of just the pretzel nuggets with beer cheese alone.
The sausage sampler seemed to be the best choice if you want to get a taste of everything. I chose to not get the potato salad and get the potato pancakes instead with a side of applesauce. I love seasoned potato pancakes with a side of applesauce for dipping. Crispy on the outside, but soft and seasoned on the inside.
The sausages were a mix of savory flavors and one slightly spiced sausage. Just like the currywurst, they each had a crunch or pop when biting into them. The sliced bun was served toasted but wasn’t seasoned, so I was surprised it wasn’t toasted with butter at least.
My overall experience at Schmidt’s was great, and the food was pretty good. I would say my experience was a 4-Star experience, but if I had gotten dessert I might have added a star. The dessert case had desserts like their famous half-pound puff pastry, chocolate cake, and pies. If I ever visit Columbus again I would go back just to give some desserts a try and take home some of those amazing pretzel bites!
